Rear Adm. Hopper has Hawaii connection

Then-Capt. Grace M. Hopper, U.S. Navy Reserve, takes the oath of office from Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, during White House ceremonies promoting her from the rank of captain to commodore on Dec. 15, 1983. President Ronald Reagan is looking on, at left. In the forefront of computer technology and programming, she was promoted to rear admiral in 1985 and passed away in 1992. USS Hopper (DDG-70), homeported at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, was named in her honor.
