Maya Soetoro-Ng, the maternal half-sister of President Barack Obama, read the children’s book she authored, “Ladder to the Moon,” to military families at the Parche Memorial Park on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Sept 30.

More than 200 people, including Navy family members and their children, attended the book reading and signing sponsored by the Honolulu Armed Services YMCA.

“I know how important it is that we hear the stories of our children and that we share our stories with them,” Soetoro-Ng said. “I hope the book will be used to open up conversations, with your children about the world and how we are all interconnected. We can do so much to help and serve others.”

Soetoro-Ng’s book is a story about little Suhaila who wishes she could have known her grandmother. One night, Suhaila gets her wish when a golden ladder appears at her window, and her grandmother invites the girl to come along with her on a magical journey.

Elizabeth Bynum, the outreach director of the Honolulu Armed Services YMCA, organized the book reading and signing event.

“Today, I just want to make sure that the impact of a wonderful good book connected with the one who wrote it stays with you for a long time,” Bynum said.

Bynum said that the book is important because of how it opens up so many dreams and how it allows children to spend time next to their parents.

“Our children should be read to every single day,” Bynum said.

Soetoro-Ng was previously a high school history teacher and university instructor in Hawaii.
