Filled with the most modern and up-to-date equipment, the new Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) Fitness Center embodies the U.S. military’s focus on wellness. That’s why it’s the perfect location for this year’s JBPHH Fitness and Wellness Fair, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 27, said Mark McFarland, joint base fitness training director. “We want to utilize this state-ofthe-art center to its maximum capacity,” he explained.
The free event is open to all Department of Defense common access card holders.
The fair will highlight MWR’s fitness and group exercise classes with demonstrations. Samples of healthy food and drinks will be provided by the Pearl Harbor and Hickam commissaries.
The event will also feature a three-point basketball shootout, a massage therapist on location providing “chair massages,” music and giveaways.
Besides the demonstrations and activities, the fair will focus on unique aspects of the new building, which opened May 21. “Our second floor has two glass racquetball courts which are heavily utilized,” McFarland said. The first floor includes two basketball courts, a cardio and gym area, restrooms and ample locker room facilities.
Other segments of the facility include classrooms, administrative space, huge group exercise room, a spin room filled with 55 spin bicycles, and an activities room for pilates and yoga.
Besides serving as a modern place to become physically fit, the new center features environmentally friendly “green” construction, including a solar hot-water heating system and 1,400 photo-voltaic cells to generate energy.
“There is also natural ambient light included into the building to reduce the impact on energy,” McFarland said.
Experts on hand at the fair will speak about recyclable materials such as carpeting and tiles used in building the center. The center’s landscaping also includes maintenance-free plants and rockscaping.
