A fire which started in the kitchen of a home at Aliamanu Military Reservation on July 18 caused $54,000 in fire, smoke and water damage.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire. Thanks to a quick response from neighbors who called 911, the fire was contained to the kitchen.
Firefighters from Federal Fire Department Hawaii and Honolulu Fire Department responded an additional $10,000 in water and smoke damage was caused to the neighboring housing unit.
According to the fire investigator with Federal Fire Department (FFD) Hawaii, the fire was accidental and caused by unattended cooking.
Federal Fire Department offers these kitchen safety tips:
* Never leave cooking unattended, not even for a minute.
* Have a lid handy to cover a pan or pot if there is a fire.
* Turn handles in to prevent tipping.
* Never put water on a grease fire.
